At twenty-two, I've not been around for very long to really judge. However, am I alone in thinking that the anglosphere cultures are becoming increasingly cynical, disillusioned trivial and overall crude? Linguistically, people have become so crude in their use of language that it saddens me. People who can't conjugate their verbs, don't understand tense and mood, all the way to having every sentence lined up with profanity. Such a rich language, and you're pissing on it! Also, God forbid that you should make requests in the conditional, instead of just demanding your Big Mac. The arts? Sure, there is gems to be found. However, when movies such as Transformers and other explosion fests, banal "romances" such a Twilight as well as pure products, I mean musicians, dominate the mainstream, you can't help but become a little disillusioned. However, the most jarring thing for me is how little respect people have for each other. Go have a look on the WoW forums for an example, all you see are self indulgent losers who strive to put others down. Isn't there something you want to change in that last quote? Maybe something to do with proper verb usage? Maybe change "is" to "are"? Lol. It's nothing personal, but the irony in this is quite funny.

People are failing in their use of language much less nowadays than 50-100 years ago. It's just that now a lot of us have internet access, so it's easier to see humanity's stupidity. Back then, only the intellectuals were writing, now, every fucktard is, because of the fact that we have a different medium. I do believe that native English speakers that are older than 16 and still don't understand how to use: your/you're, their/they're, its/it's, etc. are dumb as fuck. But think about how they spoke prior to our times (50-100 years ago). Sure, you can make a point that they should have learned better by now, and this is debatable ('cause, you have to think about human nature: laziness, sheepism, content; the "everyone is doing it, so it ain't that bad" mentality). Also, people that don't get sarcasm and/or irony suck. Arts are (generally) better. 2010 was an amazing year for films. You only see the best movies of the 40's and 50's (for example), you aren't seeing the ones that the public went to, the ones that were shit and mainstream. If you read Fitzgerald or Salinger, you'll see that the movie industry sucked a lot in its first decades. Just because we appreciate Rembrandt, Beethoven and Van Gogh, James Joyce, doesn't mean they were appreciated back in the days (the first 2 were in the mainstream only at the beginning of their careers) AND, back then, only the well educated people were interested in arts, nowadays, every retard is. A lot of artists from the past that we appreciate nowadays had a life of obscurity and we only knows of the ones that are now considered to have been good. We are probably unaware of a huge number of great artists that existed in the past, just because the public didn't liked them and we are lucky that we found out about some of the ostracised artists. Nowadays, it's easier to distribute art for an artist, via the internet. He doesn't have to censor itself and write whatever the public wants to read. A lot of great artists from the past had this problem. We don't suck that much, we just get to see any type of art we create and we can only compare them to the masterpieces from the past. Try to search for e mediocre old movie, or book, and see how they are. BTW, look at some of our current TV series: Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, The Borgias. They are mainstream and they aren't bad at all. And if we're talking about the UK, Mock the Week regularly has 3.5 million viewers. BTW, are you British? I don't understand why being cynical is bad, maybe you're using it in a different way. There is a growing anti-intellectualism in the entire Western World. Some countries are more affected than others. America is in this regard totally fucked... I agree with Nem's post that the situation in itself is not that bad as many people think it is. However, what we are seeing is the rise of reality TV crap, gossip and a declining interest in politics. The reason might be simply that the stupidity of large portions of the populace is more visible than in the past. The internet and mass media made us aware of the fact that many people are interested in gossip bullshit and reality TV, simply because they are stupid. There is a market for this stuff and I highly doubt that people in the past were in general smarter than we are today. The growing anti-intellectualism is not because people are getting dumber in general, it is because dumb people have more access to mass medias. And the market supplies what the vast majority demands which is simply bullshit. The bullshit today is louder and more common than the smart stuff, because companies can make more money with bullshit. But there is still smart stuff out there, if you look close enough. |

And actually no, "is" is the correct conjugation for there, you are wrong here. Nemesis, you make some great points. This was more of a rant than a well reasoned researched argument. I've run into so many morons recently that I just had to get it of my chest. PoodieCore, it's somewhat comforting to know that it's just not the English speaking world, it's just I didn't want to comment on cultures I have not experenced yet.

Well the only real discussion about political candidates in the media is gossip and reality-tv like banter that has nothing to do with the issues. I think the lack of interest in politics is driven by apathy far more than stupidity, in fact, most people I encounter who are not really interested in politics have more insightful things to say about politics than those who put up campaign signs and bumper stickers on their property.. I don't think the cause is stupidity. I don't think that deep down these people really care about celebrities or the reality stars - how could they? They don't even know them. The obsession with celebrity gossip stems from a person who rather than work on self-improvement, distracts themselves with the flashy lives of people more fortunate than them. To them, success only exists as an abstract, unachievable thing for movie stars and people who don't have to work hard to successful. It's all a big distraction from the fact that their own lives are empty. It actually makes total sense in the short-term because it's not very easy to answer questions like "What am I going to do with my life?" or "What have I accomplished recently," while in the long term, living in a fantasy world will mean you haven't really established a personality of your own or achieved any goals. We don't really care what experts have to say in this country, and I think that is our biggest problem. Many economists said "No, don't do X, the economy will crash! (one of my professors at my university was one of these economists that said it was a terrible idea.), what did we do? We did X. Stem cell research. Scientist: It could save millions of lives with the research it will support. Religious fundie retard: Hyuck hyuck! God says it's wrong! The US: Clap clap clap! So far correct.
Shit=Scheiße Nobody here swears by saying "Fick!" as a noun. We use the term "Scheiße!". "ficken" as a verb is correct though. And it should be "eine Hure" with a capital H. And nobody says here "Du kleine Scheiße!" which means "you small shit" which does not make really sense... You should say "Du Stück Scheiße!" which means piece of shit. Sorry for derailing... |

Yes, but swiching between page to page to copy and paste letters is rather cumbersome. Especially in a language like French, which absolutely loves them. |
