Here's my entry to the whining about your country game; Sometime ago, we had a referendum about pensions, changing the system from the current "workers pay for retirees" to the "pay for yourself" system. Instead from taking tax money from employed adults, putting it in the pot, distributing that to pensioners based on how much they contributed to when they were still working, under the new system money you create during your career would go to some fund which would cover your pension... At the time of the referendum, then-opposition party saw it as an opportunity, and we have a very, very strong Pensioners Party here. Referendum failed, and we're in the progress of committing slow-motion national, financial and possibly demographic suicide... The Old Fucks, most consistently politically active segment of the population were against it, for it may lower their monthly income. Voted according to their own interests, like we all would. If it indeed means bankruptcy, chaos and crisis 20 years from now... What the hell, they won't be around! Here's the first point for discussion; is there a solution to this self-destructive cycle of inappropriate outbursts of democracy? I mean; segment of the population that no longer produces wealth is increasing at the expense of the segment that does, because people on average now, live longer, have less kids than they used to, and spend more time getting an education. So where once there may have been 3 workers producing wealth to feed themselves as well as 2 pensioners, now the situation is vice-versa; more power for the pensioner wanting to retire even earlier and receive higher pension, and higher burden on the worker making young families have less kids, because they can't afford it... It all shift the scales further and further 'til we've hanged ourselves with too much rope, which is something we're good at actually. D'ya think there's a solution, any kind of solution that doesn't completely suck, like disbandment of democracy, institutionalized ageism... A classic case; of tragedy of the commons; individuals working, or in this case voting, for their own interests, in time get's everyone good and properly FUCKED! Which brings me to part two of my lovely little rant and why this isn't in the politics section. Technology is awesome, it enables your independence, you can do almost yourself whereas before you'd have to rely on the help of others. You no longer need the help of 30 people to work your field when the time of harvest comes, and the other 29 aren't expecting you to help with theirs. You can achieve your own goals! So your work, mainly to achieve your own goals, not the ones the entire village set up for themselves. I have this, not very scientific theory; with technology enabling individualism and independence, the goals individuals set for themselves to achieve, and the methods they use, vary more than they did ever before. Because unlike before, they actually can only take care of their own asses. So the tragedy of the commons types of situations will become ever greater hindrance to humanity, until we've inadvertently blown ourselves off this rock... Which may already indicated with climate change, pollution etc. We're becoming de-socialized, and "Viva collectivism!" G'night kiddies! |

Voting wars are inherent to the system. We have the same pension crises impending here in Canada. |
| We'll have a real wild time. | |
