Drone Pilots and bravery. -=[Full Disclosure]=- My sister in law is dating a drone pilot. He runs training missions in the skies above my beloved desert. He probably has actual "combat" experience as well. He also hates doing that. He is a fully trained pilot who despises being stuck behind a computer. He wants to actually fly, and I'm sure if he were presented with a medal for playing Ace Combat, it would get shoved in a drawer. |

While I do think, if you're gonna kill and maim, more or less random civillians, you should at least have the decency to get properly traumatized by your actions... This isn't much different from giving medals to 'real 'pilots for dropping bombs in an uncontested airspace. Meh. |

If that is true, then that drone pilot is a complete moron. How many American bombers have been destroyed in Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq and Pakistan? What the fuck does he think the risk is? |

Not all that many? Helicopters and such may be a completely different manner, but the amount of bombers that have been downed is quite small. The insurgents pretty much just don't have anything worth a fuck to take down something of that level. And weapons that can have a tendency to be detrimental to the whole "guerilla" aspect of the war. And yes, a trained pilot will generally prefer being in actual planes. That was my point... That the risks are very low... You got a link of a woman that pilots a FIGHTER jet and, from that, you conclude that generally, people that pilot BOMBERS prefer to do it using a real plane? |

That's the war of the fucking future. Drones, robots and outsourcing the actual American soldier crap. Pretty sure in a not too distant future, the Pentagon will also outsource the video gaming behind it to India. After all, hiring guys operating the computers from there would be cheaper. That in combination with mercenaries from private security firms who take care of the few guarding operations left on the ground and you got yourself a pretty fluffy way to fight wars without the risk that a single yankee has to die. Fuck this honor crap anyway. War sucks. It just interesting to see that we are already living in a bad dystopian sci-fiction reality. |

If flying a drone is more cowardly, then flying a modern computerized and heavily protected plane, then by that logic, flying some modern F-15 is more cowardly, then flying a Messerschmitt, or those WW1 cardboard planes! |

The progression of warfare as a whole is fucking scary, at first we had to beat each other to death up close but then we invented the bow and arrow and could kill people long distance, this trend of separating the target from the attacker continued with the gun, artillery, missiles ect. And now with this drone stuff you don't even have to be remotely present to your targets or in any immediate danger at all, its just get up, drive to work, shoot a bunch of little figures on a screen, go home, go to sleep. This shit fucked up yo. |

Oh for fuck's sake Yar, they are rewarding medals for sitting inside some base whilst "flying" what is nothing more than a despicable device for detached murder. If they must use the dones, fine; just don't be so asinine about it with notions of bravery. Also, don't put words in my mouth you assuming jerk. |

So? What's your point - that medals should be awarded only for doing something life-threatening? Okay, so the war should be somehow artificially made more threatening for the sake... of what, a tradition of giving little stupid shiny badges? You can't prohibit people for liking shiny things you know. |

Medals should be rewarded for valor. (saving the life of another soilder, exceptional performance under fire, et cetera) There's nothing valorous about 'bug splat' Does that mean they need to and make things unnecessarily dangerous? Of course not. 'But that does not mean they need to reward medals simply for the sake of rewarding medals. (especially when it seems to be nothing more than a cynical attempt for justification of the activity) Edited by Taelôk, 14 Jul 2012, 08:39 PM.

Ok, I see your point, but from what I've read about modern warfare, there's not much opportunities for valor in it today. That would make receiving a medal an extremely rare event, and, face it, who wants to go to war with having no medals for it? Medals aren't just shiny badges after all, there's also monetary reward - shouldn't good pilots be rewarded for doing their job better then, say, bad pilots? Even if they operate remotely controlled machines. |

It does answer your question, baby bum. Which is the point of receiving a medal, for being extraordinary, not for just doing your job. You are some special kind of retard, you really are. Pilots who do their jobs get paid, bad pilots are punished in one way or another. Are you going to give your doctor a medal for diagnosing you with a cold and giving you the right medicine? The link in the OP is about whether flying a drone requires bravery. It doesn't. Edited by Blargazaur, 15 Jul 2012, 02:04 AM.

No, but I'm going to give you a medal for being First Rank Retard for making the most idiotic analogy. Doctors don't accept medals for the same reason they don't wear shoulder marks and cap badges - because they're not soldiers, you moron! They can accept a honorary medal though, or some other award for working exceptionally well, being an employee of the month or something - but they don't receive military awards, because they're not in the military. I can't believe I have to explain this to you, you blathering fool. And, for the second time: medal isn't just a badge. They give you money with the medal. It's a way of monetary compensating extra credit, whatever it is. Money good. You understand money, yes? Money is good, comprende? |
